Photo by Susan Lippman.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-entry--section article-entry--textblock article-entry--section\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a lecture last year at Bennington College, Barry Hannah offered advice to writing students that was simple and profound: \u201c<strong>Be master of such as you have.<\/strong>\u201d The critically acclaimed, award-winning writer from Mississippi is himself master of the hot moment, of linguistic reverb (his term), and of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">enviable<\/span> sentence. From\u00a0<cite>Airships<\/cite>\u00a0and\u00a0<cite>Ray<\/cite>\u00a0to\u00a0<cite>Bats Out of Hell<\/cite>, his voice has been a corrective to so much generic-sounding fiction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>enviable<\/strong> adj. \u4ee4\u4eba\u7fa1\u6155\u7684<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hannah has always been brilliant at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">depict<\/span>ing people <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">in retreat<\/span>, not just from the awfulness of their souls, but from the sweetness of them. This time out, in the stories in\u00a0<cite>High Lonesome<\/cite>, Hannah is <strong>Grand Marshall at a parade of<\/strong> human ugliness. His characters are \u201cautoannointed third-raters,\u201d or the folks who oppose them: \u201cBeating back nature was the obsession of men in these suburbs, and failing that, arranging it like a combed orphan.\u201d Yet there is a softer spirit present in certain of these stories, though less acute an observer\u2014a reassessment from a new stage of life. \u201cSomething tired and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">batter<\/span>ed and loud had just <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">thrown in the towel<\/span><\/em>,\u201d is the thought of a man recently released from \u201cthe lifetime monster of lust,\u201d and of drink.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>depict<\/strong> vt. \u63cf\u753b<\/li>\n<li><strong>be in retreat<\/strong> \u5728\u9759\u4fee\u671f<\/li>\n<li><strong>throw in the sponge (\u6216towel)<\/strong>\u00a0(\u62f3\u51fb\u4e2d)\u627f\u8ba4\u5931\u8d25, \u8ba4\u8f93, \u653e\u5f03\u4e0d\u5e72<\/li>\n<li><strong>batter <\/strong>vt. \u91cd\u51fb; \u6bb4\u6253 vi. \u8fde\u7eed\u731b\u51fb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hannah has said he finds plots \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">confining<\/span>\u201d: his free-range <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">excursion<\/span>s are a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">wry<\/span>, wise <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">play-by-play<\/span> of old fools and new fools just hanging around hoping somebody don\u2019t like it. Lowered expectations <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">abound<\/span>, nowhere more than in marriage, where the feeling of a man for his wife is \u201can <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">embattled<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">apathy<\/span> each morning <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">goad<\/span>ed into mere courtesy.\u201d One fellow beats up another \u201cin a dutiful way, just <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sock<\/span>ing him as if stamping the price on groceries.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>confine<\/strong> vt. <span class=\"trgg x_xd2\"><span class=\"trg\"><span class=\"trans\">\u7981\u95ed;
