I got my degree of Bachelor of software engineering in July 2022. And I’m applying for some liberal arts postgraduate programs (23 fall) such as intercultural communication and comparative literature. To be more competent, I seek to equip myself with more comprehensive knowledge in humanities in my gap year.
\nI think this course would serve as a good start for me. I’ve always dreamed to learn more about philosophy, which I regard as the essence of human wisdom, the base pillar of all academic activities, and the key to a better human society. The University of Edinburgh is also one of my dream schools, and I do appreciate its academic excellence and abundant online-learning resources (I’ve applied for the program: Language and Intercultural Communication of UoE as well!).
\nBut pitifully I don\u2019t have enough savings as a budget, in the meantime I don\u2019t have any source of income right now. Also, my parents are kind of struggling to support me with the coming year abroad, as we all know COVID-19 brings about a considerable economic impact on the whole world. We\u2019ve all been trying our best to save money these days.

I’m interested in philosophy, especially epistemology and metaphysics, hoping to study them in depth and systematically. Apart from the interest-oriented factor, obtaining a philosophy-related Coursera certificate can enrich my liberal arts background when applying, and at the same time, it’s a great chance for me to have some understanding of the lecturers and course styles of the University of Edinburgh in advance.
\nIn the future, I hope to conduct in-depth research in the field of language, culture and literature, and I am also considering doing academic research in philosophy. Philosophy is the unification of world outlook and methodology, and the generalization and summary of natural knowledge, social knowledge, and thinking knowledge. From where I stand, learning philosophy can enable me to understand social consciousness and human culture from a higher level, so as to better observe individual thoughts, emotions, and social life through the art form of literature. I also agree that mastering basic philosophical knowledge will be very helpful for my future academic research and the improvement of my critical thinking ability.
\nCoursera can provide me with a platform for academic communication between myself and passionate learners from all over the world.
